The Rise of Ethical Jewelry.

Ethical jewelry is transforming the way we think about adornments. Traditionally, the jewelry industry has been fraught with issues like conflict diamonds and unethical mining practices. However, a new wave of designers is prioritizing sustainability and ethics. Brands like Brilliant Earth and Fair Trade Jewelry Co. are committed to sourcing conflict-free diamonds and using recycled metals.

Lab-grown diamonds are also becoming a popular choice, offering the same brilliance without the environmental and ethical concerns. This shift not only supports fair labor practices but also ensures that beauty does not come at the cost of the planet or human rights.

3D Jewelry: The Shiny Evolution of Jewelry Design

3D Jewelry: The Shiny Evolution of Jewelry Design

Although jewelry trends can come and go, it's always fun to try out shiny new accessories. But what is 3D jewelry? Find out more about this fun jewelry design.
As technology advances at a breakneck pace, designers have access to more and more ways to create things.
When the first commercial 3D printer hit the shelves in 2009, jewelry designers weren't exactly lining up to purchase one. The technology revolutionized scientific fields first, giving us things like 3D internal organs and 3D dental implants.

Over the past few years, though, 3D printing has become even more advanced and versatile. This has opened a whole new world to artists eager to bring their jewelry design into the 21st century.

What are some of the exciting ways designers are utilizing this technology? Read on to learn more about 3D jewelry design!

How does 3D jewelry design work?

3D jewelry making is a combination of modern print technology and traditional metal casting.
Once a designer has created their piece digitally, a 3D printer creates a model made of wax resin. This model is placed in a flask and covered with fine plaster. Once the plaster becomes solid, it forms the mold for casting the gold, bronze, silver, copper, or brass.

Depending on the type of jewelry being created, the piece may then go through different types of post-processing. This includes setting precious stones and applying finishes.

The quest for unique designs

Few things adorn the human body like a one-of-a-kind designer piece of jewelry.
With the advent of 3D printing, jewelry makers now have the power to create anything they could ever imagine.

The technology is great for buyers, as well. Those who wish to purchase a custom piece of jewelry from Tiffany's or Cartier may not have the budget to do so. Instead, they can create their own jewelry design and order it for a fraction of the price.

One customer wanted a unique pendant to capture her honeymoon experience in Paris. Using Google Earth and 3D printing, the designer was able to make an exact scale replica of the Eiffel Tower and set it above a pearl.

Endless possibilities

What else are some of the world's most talented designers doing with this new technology?
  • Rob Wright, a jeweler in New Zealand, is using 3D printing to integrate fingerprints on the inside of wedding bands.
  • A designer for Shapeways has created 25 unique rings featuring skylines of the world's most famous cities.
  • Nervous System recently introduced an app that allows customers to design their own flexible jewelry.
  • Memento Mori offers Kolibri skull pendants and earrings, made from 3D scans of a real skull.
  • A designer for Thingiverse created a planter necklace so wearers could "carry a plant on an adventure."
  • A designer on Etsy created a brass pendant of an origami crane to wear on a necklace or charm bracelet.

What would YOU design?

With so many companies offering customizable 3D jewelry, the sky's the limit for what you can create.

Maybe you'd like a chunky geometric necklace styled after ancient Incan culture. Or maybe a custom piece like Jane Seymour's blue diamond ring is more your style.

Whatever your personal style and taste, there's a custom-made piece that's perfect for you!

What do you think of 3D jewelry design? What would you choose to create? Leave a comment in the box below!

Shine Bright at Every Occasion: 5 Tips for Cleaning Gold Jewelry at Home

Shine Bright at Every Occasion: 5 Tips for Cleaning Gold Jewelry at Home

Looking to brighten up an outfit? Gold jewelry is a perfect way to make a statement. Discover 5 easy tips for cleaning your stylish accessories at home.

Gold jewelry is an excellent way to add sparkle to any outfit. But what if your gold stops sparkling?
Cleaning your jewelry is always a chore if you don't know the proper way to do it.

But in order to keep your gold pieces looking beautiful longer, cleaning it regularly is necessary.
If you're having trouble cleaning your gold, we're here to help.

Read on to discover the five tips for cleaning gold jewelry at home.

1. Remove before showering or cleaning

Before you even start to clean your jewelry, you should always make sure you're preventing it from harm.

There are certain times you should remove your jewelry in order to keep them pristine. The times you should remove your jewelry include:

  • Cleaning - If you're doing dishes or scrubbing the bathtub, those harsh chemicals you're using can warp your gold. These chemicals can leave a nasty film over the top of your gold that will make it look dull.
  • Swimming pools and hot tubs - High amounts of chlorine can tarnish your gold. This can do even more damage in warmer temperatures.
  • Showering - While gold mixed with alloys can be relatively tough, harsh soaps and shampoos will dull your gold pieces. 24 karat gold is even softer, so you'll want to take extra care.

2. Use a soft cleaner

Remember that gold is a soft metal. Using a harsh cleaner will only further harm your pieces. If you're cleaning your gold at home, use warm water and a bit of dishwashing detergent. Make sure that you are using warm water, and hot scalding hot.

You can also add a bit of ammonia if your gold has experienced any tarnishing. Gently wash the piece with a toothbrush or soft scrubber. Don't be too rough with the piece as it is rather delicate. Depending on the jewelry design, you may need to get into smaller crevices.

3. Rinse in warm water

Try not to let the gold sit for too long in the warm water mixture. You'll want to clean and then rinse the piece immediately after. Rinse the gold in a lukewarm water.

4. Air dry or use a soft cloth

The best way to dry gold pieces is to let them air dry. You can first blot them dry with a soft, polishing cloth. Lay them out on a towel until they are completely dry.

5. Seek professional help

If your gold jewelry is still looking dull or tarnished, you may need to seek professional help. There are retail cleaners on the market you can use, but they may be too harsh for your jewelry. If you do choose to use them, make sure they are specific to clean gold.

Make your gold jewelry sparkle again

Having gold pieces in your jewelry collection is perfect if you want to make a statement. But you must make sure that you're taking care of these pieces for them to last a long time. Prevent the gold pieces from dullness and tarnishing by removing them before showering, cleaning, or swimming in chlorine.
